Santa Maria della Vittoria is a pretty Baroque church tucked into central Rome, and most people go for one main thing: the Cornaro Chapel. Once you’re inside, the whole place feels ornate and theatrical—gilding, dramatic decoration, and that “everything is happening in one scene” vibe that Baroque does so well.
The standout artwork is Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Ecstasy of Saint Teresa (in the Cornaro Chapel): a marble sculptural group where Saint Teresa of Ávila appears to swoon in spiritual rapture as an angel holds a golden spear/arrow over her. What makes it extra memorable is how it’s staged like a performance, with surrounding donor portraits of the Cornaro family watching from the sides, all set up to make you feel like you’re peeking into the moment.
