Basilica di Santa Maria in Cosmedin is an ancient church right by Piazza della Bocca della Verità, and it has a very “older than you’d think” atmosphere inside—more sturdy and medieval/early-Christian in feel than the grand Baroque churches you might see elsewhere in Rome. It’s also especially known for the Mouth of Truth and its historical layers, with older Roman elements and Byzantine-Greek influences reflected in the space.
The highlights inside are the Cosmatesque floor (geometric stone inlay with a big purple porphyry centerpiece), plus fragments of older frescoes (including scenes with prophets like Daniel and Ezekiel). You can also see the Schola Cantorum (the marble enclosure for the singers) and the crypt area with its small, columned layout and preserved ancient-looking masonry.
