Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola

Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola is a Jesuit Baroque church right on Piazza Sant’Ignazio (near the Pantheon area). Even if the outside looks pretty straightforward, inside it’s all about spectacle—especially the way the church pulls you to look up, because the ceiling and dome are the main event.

The big, famous artworks inside are by Andrea Pozzo. His standout is the illusionistic ceiling fresco that looks like the vault opens into the sky—done in trompe-l’oeil style—and there’s also a fake/deliberately illusory “dome” effect painted so it reads as real architecture when you view it from the right spot (there’s even a spot on the floor used to see the effect properly).
