Santa Maria in Trastevere (Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere) is a long-standing church in the Trastevere neighborhood, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It’s been an important church for centuries and the building you visit today was largely rebuilt in the 12th century under Pope Innocent II. Inside, you’ll notice a mix of periods: medieval mosaics in the main sacred areas, plus later Baroque decoration that makes the interior feel warm and richly decorated.
The most famous artwork is the set of medieval mosaics, especially the golden mosaic in the apse, with Mary enthroned with the Christ Child and saints and church leaders shown around them. Another big highlight is the Madonna delle Clemenza, a revered Marian image kept in the church, often associated with a special chapel (the Altemps chapel). If you stroll around the chapels and side spaces, you’ll also spot other devotional paintings and altarpieces that support the church’s long tradition of pilgrimage, especially around Marian feast days.
