The Chiesa di San Francesco a Ripa, in the Trastevere area, is just a short walk from the river Tiber. This church is special to Franciscan history because St. Francis of Assisi stayed nearby when he was in Rome, and the whole place has a calm, devotional feel once you step inside. Look around and you’ll notice how the church blends older Franciscan memory with a Baroque-style interior—so it’s both meaningful and richly decorated.
For the standout artworks, make your way to the Palluzzi-Albertoni Chapel, where you’ll find Bernini’s masterpiece “Ecstasy of Blessed Ludovica Albertoni,” a famous dramatic sculpture that’s hard to miss. Also, in the church’s chapels and side areas, there are important paintings and fresco scenes connected to Franciscan saints—including works by artists such as Domenico Muratori (for scenes from the life of San Giovanni da Capestrano) and a devotional Annunciation painting in another chapel. If you’re interested in art history beyond the “main show,” the church is also home to a chapel dedicated to the painter Giorgio de Chirico.
