San Nicola in Carcere is tucked right by the Teatro di Marcello and it’s one of those wonderfully “layered Rome” churches. What makes it instantly memorable is that it’s built around visible pieces of ancient Roman temples—so you’ll see older stone columns integrated into the church’s walls and layout, like the past is literally embedded in the place.
Inside, the vibe is pretty charming: you’re walking through a mix of old and newer elements. There are painted religious works, including fresco panels showing scenes from the Life and Miracles of St Nicholas (attributed to Marco Tullio Montagna), plus a richly decorated ceiling with blue-and-gold decoration and the coat of arms of Pope Pius IX (painted/developed as part of the 19th-century renovations).
If you like music, try to book yourself a ticket to the Vivaldi concert performed at the church during the evening.
