Chiesa Nuova (Santa Maria in Vallicella) is that classic Baroque, Counter-Reformation-style church – bright, theatrical, and packed with religious art. It’s the principal church of the Oratorians, and the inside has a deliberate, big “look up and feel it” effect, with chapels and artwork all guiding you toward the main altar.
Notable artworks inside include major Baroque masterpieces: Federico Barocci’s painting “Presentation of Mary to the Temple” in the left transept, and a whole set of altarpieces by big-name artists such as Pietro da Cortona (notably Trinity in the dome), plus Rubens (an altarpiece on an unusual slate/canvas/copper support), and works by Cesare Nebbia and Passignano among others. If you’re looking up while walking through, da Cortona’s fresco program is a highlight—especially the dome fresco and the dramatic ceiling/apse decoration that ties the space together.
