Hello, Iโm Veronica
The sky is not completely dark at night. Were the sky absolutely dark, one would not be able to see the silhouette of an object against the sky.

Basilica di Santa Croce

The Basilica of Santa Croce is Florenceโs principal Franciscan church, founded in the late 13th century, construction began in 1294 under Arnolfo di Cambio and continued through the 14th century, giving the building its expansive Gothic nave and chapels. Its striking white-and-green marble faรงade is a 19th-century neo-Gothic restoration that overlays the medieval structure.
Santa Croce is best known as the โTemple of the Italian Gloriesโ: tombs and monuments commemorate luminaries such as Michelangelo (cenotaph), Galileo, Machiavelli, and Rossini, while the chapels contain major fresco cycles by Giotto and others, Renaissance altar pieces, and notable leather workshops and craft displays in the adjoining convent buildings. Allow 1โ2 hours to see the main tombs, frescoes, and museum rooms; tickets often include access to cloisters and the leather school, and modest dress is requested inside the basilica.

Basilica di Santo Spirito

The Basilica di Santo Spirito is a large, airy Renaissance church in Florenceโs Oltrarno quarter, rebuilt to Brunelleschi-influenced plans in the 15th century and finished with a simple, unadorned faรงade that emphasizes internal proportion over external show. Its long nave, slender columns, and coffered wooden ceiling create a spacious interior that rewards slow exploration and offers a quieter atmosphere than the cityโs more visited churches.
Art and architectural highlights include numerous chapels with works by Renaissance mastersโmost notably a wooden crucifix by Michelangelo (an early work) in the sacristy, altarpieces and frescoes by Masaccio, Filippino Lippi, and Botticelli-adjacent artists, plus a peaceful cloister.

The Duomo

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo) dominates Florenceโs skyline with its vast Gothic nave and Brunelleschiโs revolutionary red-tiled domeโconstruction began in 1296 to Arnolfo di Cambioโs design and continued across the 14thโ15th centuries, making the building a layered testament to medieval and early Renaissance civic ambition. The polychrome marble exterior and ornate faรงade frame an immense interior whose scale, pointed arches, and patterned floors convey the cityโs wealth and communal identity; the cathedral complex includes Giottoโs adjacent campanile and the Baptistery, forming the heart of Florenceโs religious and civic center.
Inside, climb Brunelleschiโs dome (via 463 steps) to inspect the domeโs inner frescoes of the Last Judgment by Vasari and Zuccari and to enjoy panoramic views of Florence; the nave contains notable works such as the clock by Paolo Uccello and various chapels and monuments.

Basilica di San Miniato

Perched on a hill above Florence near the Piazzale Michelangelo, the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte is one of the cityโs finest Romanesque churches, celebrated for its striking white-and-green marble faรงade, geometric inlay, and elevated, fortress-like presence. The churchโs exterior and terraced setting offer sweeping skyline views and a peaceful approach through cypress-lined paths and cloistered gardens, making the visit feel like a retreat from the crowded historic center.
Inside, the basilica rewards quiet contemplation with a luminous, well-preserved interior: a marble-encrusted high altar, a beautifully decorated 13th-century mosaic in the apse, and a serene 11thโ13th-century crypt said to house the tomb of St. Miniato. The adjoining cloister and chapels contain funerary monuments and frescoes; allow about 45โ90 minutes to explore, combine the visit with nearby viewpoints, and wear modest dress for this active religious site.
